The history of oil and fuel oil transshipment in the Astrakhan region dates back to the 19th century with the 'Nobel Brothers' Oil Production Partnership'. By 1904, one of the largest depots of the Nobel Partnership was the Astrakhan depot, which ranked first among other depots in Russia, followed by the depot in Batumi in second place, Nizhny Novgorod in third, Tsaritsyn in fourth, St. Petersburg in fifth, and Moscow in sixth.
